Diabetes: Symptoms, Types and Management

Introduction

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in Egypt, and many people have high blood sugar without knowing it. Early detection and good control greatly reduce the risk of complications and let a person live a normal, active life.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which the blood sugar (glucose) level rises, either because of a shortage of the hormone insulin or because the body does not respond to it well enough. Insulin is what helps the body's cells use sugar for energy.

Types of diabetes

  • Type 1: usually appears at a younger age and requires insulin.
  • Type 2: the most common, linked to factors such as weight and lifestyle, and usually appears in adults.
  • Gestational diabetes: appears during pregnancy and needs special follow-up.

Diabetes symptoms

  • Excessive thirst and drinking a lot of water
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • General fatigue and tiredness
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Slow wound healing

Risk factors

  • A family history of diabetes
  • Excess weight and physical inactivity
  • High blood pressure or lipids
  • Older age

When to see a doctor

If you have diabetes symptoms, or you have risk factors, it is worth having a blood sugar test. Early detection makes control much easier.

If there is a severe rise in blood sugar with very intense thirst, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, or confusion — go to the nearest emergency department right away. Also, if there is a severe drop in blood sugar with symptoms such as trembling, heavy sweating, dizziness, confusion or loss of consciousness — this is also an emergency that needs quick action (if the person is conscious, they can take a fast source of sugar until help arrives).

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made with tests such as fasting blood sugar and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and the doctor interprets the results in the context of your full condition.

How to manage diabetes

Good control relies on several factors working together:

  • A balanced diet and reducing fast sugars
  • Regular physical activity and keeping a healthy weight
  • Regular monitoring of blood sugar as advised by the doctor
  • Medication or insulin when the doctor decides — the type and dose are set by the doctor according to your case

Why is controlling diabetes important?

Good blood-sugar control reduces the long-term risk of complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart. That is why regular follow-up matters more than simply treating symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

Can diabetes be cured completely?
Diabetes is a chronic condition that is very well controlled with treatment and lifestyle; the goal is to keep a balanced blood-sugar level and avoid complications — your doctor will explain the plan for your case.

Can a person with diabetes eat normally?
They can follow a balanced diet while paying attention to the amount and type of carbohydrates, and the doctor or a dietitian will help you build a suitable plan.

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2?
Type 1 requires insulin and usually appears at a younger age, while type 2 is the most common and is linked to lifestyle and weight factors.

Can diabetes cause problems without symptoms?
Yes — long-standing high blood sugar can gradually affect organs such as the kidneys, eyes and nerves, which is why regular follow-up is important.
